AFCW 7 Shifnal Town 1

Tom Piggott struck four times as AFC Wulfrunians thumped Shifnal Town 7-1 at the Castlecroft Stadium.

Wulfs took the game to their visitors from the start with Nathan Rose-Laing having a shot tipped wide by keeper Scott Hoof when clean through and then the same player was foiled by the keeper again as Hoof produced a superb point blank save from the Wulfs hit man.

The visitors resistance didn’t last long as Wulfs took a 12thminute lead when Jordan Perks carried the ball down the right and played a neat one-two with Andy Thompson before beating the keeper at his near post.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 as Liam Wilkinson slid a good ball into the inside right channel for Thompson to run on and slot past the keeper.

Wulfs continued to pound the visiting goal with Dave Asbury twice heading over from corners and Jake Sedgemore twice forcing the keeper into making good saves from his free kicks.

The inevitable third goal came in the 35th minute as Piggott netted his first goal of the game by latching on to Sedgemore through ball and holding off his marker before firing past the helpless keeper.

David Howells was then foiled by the keeper before Piggott added his second, and the team’s fourth, two minutes before the interval when he slotted home Thompson’s low ball across goal at the far post.

The second half started in similar fashion with Piggott crossing in from the left and Ash Burd sending a diving header across goal but wide of the far post.

Shifnal began to show some attacking threat with Ricky Dumbrell heading wide from Tom Worthington’s cross and Jamie Price forcing keeper Danny Tipton to scramble across goal to push his 30 yard effort wide.

Their extra commitment led to them pulling a goal back in fortunate fashion when a long ball forward forced defender was headed back to his keeper by Perks but Tipton slipped and the ball rolled into the net for an own goal.

Wulfs’ response was swift with Piggott adding two more to his personal tally, both goals being set up by Sedgemore and ending up with the young striker rounding the keeper before slotting home.

Substitute Mike Robertson then saw his long range shotpushed wide by Hoof before Wulfs added a seventh goal in the final minute when Jake Webb’s cross was headed home by Nathan Rose-Laing.
