AFCW 1 Wellington Ams 1

AFC Wulfrunians were held to their first draw of the season as Wellington Amateurs took a share of the spoils with a 1-1 draw at the Castlecroft Stadium. Justin Worthington fired the visitors ahead in the first half but Jake Sedgemore’s quality strike early in the second half secured a point for Wulfs.

After an enforced three week break, both teams were slow to get going and the early chances were limited to a Jordan Perks header which Ams keeper Andy Pryce collected under his crossbar and a Callum Pugh header over at the other end.

Wulfs were struggling to get going but Dave Asbury should have done better with a near post header from a Sedgemore corner while Tom Piggott flashed a 25 yard shot well wide of the target.

The movement of Wellington’s forward players was causing a few problems and led to them taking the lead in the 32nd minute when Lewis Welch was picked out on the right and he cut the ball back for Justin Worthington to fire home from twelve yards.

The goal sparked Wulfs into life and Mike Robertson went close when his cross from the left sailed over the keeper and struck the face of the crossbar before being cleared.

Robertson had another chance shortly before the interval when Pryce punched a Sedgemore free kick straight to him but he blazed over.

A half time substitution saw Danny Crudgington replace Robertson and he made an immediate impact when his cross from the left was cut back by Piggott for Sedgemore to sidestep his man before firing onto the top corner from just inside the area.

Wulfs were now well in control and Pryce got down well to save James Skedgel’s glancing header and Nathan Rose-Laing stabbed a close range shot just wide after being picked out at the near post by Piggott.

Perks was next to go close when he cut in from the right and cut back past a defender before seeing his shot from a narrow angle well saved by Pryce.

With the game going into injury Wulfs had one final chance to win the game when Andy Thompson burst on to Sesgemore’s through ball but fired his shot inches wide the far post.
