AFC Wulfrunians 3 Bustleholme 0

AFC Wulfrunians kicked off the new league campaign in fine style with a 3-0 victory at home to Bustleholme.

Wulfs were quickly out of the blocks and went close early on when Nathan Rose-Laing headed Jake Sedgemore’s deep free kick wide and Dave Howells just failed to convert Danny Crudgington’s low near post cross.

Tom Piggott then wasted two good chances by shooting weakly at the keeper before Rose-Laing went closest yet to scoring when his fierce shot cannoned back off the upright.

Piggott was then foiled by an excellent last ditch tackle by Phillip Ellerby before Wulfs finally took the lead in the 38th minute. Crudgington’s long ball forward was flicked on by Piggott to put Rose-Laing in the clear. Although his first effort was well saved by keeper Luke Stevens, last seasons top goalscorer was alert enough to fire home the rebound.

Wulfs quickly extended their lead the first minute of the second half when Rose-Laing was fouled on the right edge of the area and Sedgemore curled home a superb trademark free kick.

Howells then went close with a dipping volley that flew just over the crossbar and Piggott went closer still when his shot flashed across the goal but just wide of the far post.

Ross Brown then glanced Sesgemore’s inswinging corner just wide before Wulfs eventually increased their lead two minutes in to injury time when Mike Robertson’s dangerous cross evaded everyone and nestled into the far corner of the net.

In the end it was a solid start for the new management team of Steve Palmer and Jon Purdie.
