AFC Wulfrunians went within eight minutes of chalking up their third straight victory but in the end had to settle for a share of the spoils at Walsall Wood as Dom Dell’s first half strike was cancelled out by Ben Harvey’s late finish.
An even start to the game saw James Hill fire a free kick straight at the keeper while, at the other end, Hagi Jinikeh screwed his shot wide after being picked out by Jai Verma.
It was Wulfs who opened the scoring with a fine team goal. Chris Knight produced a sublime touch on the right before releasing Kieron Northwood. He cut a low ball to the near post where Dom Dell produced a fine first time finish.
The home side fought back and a corner from the right was headed back in to the middle by Kamal Campbell where striker Kevin Monteiro hooked over the bar from close range
Wulfs thought they had doubled their lead just before the interval when ???’s low cross from the right was inadvertently turned home at the near post by a Wood defender but the assistant referee flagged for offside.
Half time: Walsall Wood 0 AFC Wulfrunians 1
Wulfs had another golden opportunity to extend their lead two minutes into the second half when Chris Knight’s cross from the left picked out an onrushing James Hill but he headed high and wide when it looked easier to score.
Wood were always dangerous on the counter and went close to an equaliser when Hayden Purves was put clear in the inside right position but Tom Haywood stood up well to save with his legs.
Haywood was at his brilliant best agin shortly after to deny Purves again after he had been put clear by a long ball over the top by keeper Callum Smith.
Wulfs went close when a break out of defence ended with Chris Knight switching to namesake Ty who chested forward before striking a dipping shot from 25 yards out that dropped just the wrong side of the post.
Just when it looked as though Wulfs might be able to hold out for the win, Wood found an 82nd minute equaliser. A deep corner from the right was returned back into the middle by Dan Birch where Ben Harvey produced a smart finish on the swivel.
It could have got worse for Wulfs in injury time when Verma cut inside two men but fired his shot into the side netting.
In the end a draw was probably the fair result and was enough to move Wulfs up to second place in the table begin Hanley Town.
