Wulfs win on the road at Swifts

Midland Football League Premier Division
Stourport Swifts v AFC Wulfrunians
Saturday 26th September 2020

Wulfs, having gained a midweek point against Lye Town whilst playing most of the game with ten men, had relieved the pressure somewhat following their poor start to the season.

A win today would make it seven points from a possible twelve, a loss would heap the pressure on Manager Darren Goodall and so for the visitors it was a must win game.

Playing in front of a large crowd and in sunny but blustery conditions, AFC should have been ahead after three minutes but Aaron Bishop’s header was well saved by the Stourport keeper following a great cross by Craig Gregg.

Stourport began to get their passing game going and Nick Macpherson wasted a great chance for the home side when put through after fifteen minutes.

Following a period of pressure by Stourport, Till broke away for AFC but blazed over, but this signalled an AFC onslaught.

Till and Spray combined well to set up a chance for Gregg but he shot tamely at the keeper.

James Spray then put the visitors ahead on the half hour curling a wonderful shot in to the top corner of the Stourport net.

AFC continued to dominate and Pearlman nearly doubled the lead crashing a shot against the upright, Stourport were lucky to reach the interval only one down.

HALF TIME: Stourport Swifts 0 AFC Wulfrunians 1

The first half belonged to AFC and clearly the home team had received a wake up call from their management team.

An early corner for Stourport was headed narrowly over the bar but the game then subsided into a dull affair with neither team threatening and AFC happy to defend their narrow but comfortable lead.

Late on Stourport managed to fashion a chance when a free kick from distance hit the AFC woodwork, but they did not deserve an equaliser and AFC saw the game out to claim a precious three point and move into the top six in the table.

A word of praise for the officials, they maintained quiet none fussy control of the game which added to the spectacle.

FINAL SCORE: Stourport Swifts 0 AFC Wulfrunians 1
