Wulfs slip to home defeat

AFC Wulfrunians V Coventry Sphinx

Midland Football League Premier Division

Tuesday 15th September 2020

AFC Wulfrunians first home game of the season saw them play host to a Coventry Sphinx side who had enjoyed two good wins in the FA Cup, but we’re yet to open up their league campaign.

It was Wulfs who started better and had a great early chance to open the scoring. James Spray played a neat ball into the feet of Aaron Bishop who turned well into the area before dragging a shot across goal which Craig Gregg just failed to convert at the far post.

They were to tie this missed chance as the visitors opened the scoring in the 12th minute. A corner from the right was diverted goalwards off a Wulfs head, forcing a good save from keeper Tom Haywood but Colin Smith was on hand to force the loose ball home from close range after a bit of a scramble.

Sphinx went close again just two minutes later with Patsun Tufan heading a left wing free kick just wide of the upright.
Wulfs were dealt a blow on the half hour mark when Spray was forced off through injury with young Tommy Poole coming on to replace him.
The rest of the first half was full of hard graft but devoid of any clear cut chances.
HALF TIME: AFC Wulfunians 0 Coventry Sphinx 1
Wulfs can’t our firing at the start of the second half and James Hill flashed a shot just wide of the post yo signal their intent.
Despite an improved showing from the home side in the second half, it was Sphinx who looked more likely to add to the scoring with Lewis Noon forcing Haywood into making a good save from a free kick 20 yards out.
Sphinx continued to look dangerous on the break with Noon and substitute Mohamed Billy both going close to doubling the lead.
With time about to elapse, Wulfs had a great chance to take a share of the spoils. Chris Knight tried his luck with a shot from long range which had keeper Tom Cross diving full length to keep out. Mat Johnson raced on to the loose ball but Cross was up quickly to save his effort at point blank range to secure a deserved three points for the visitors.
FINAL SCORE: AFC Wulfrunians 0 Coventry Sphinx 1
