Wulfs and Racers share spoils

Midland Football League Premier Division
Tuesday 29th September 2020
AFC Wulfrunians v Racing Club Warwick

Wulfs played host to Racing Club Warwick hoping to avenge an opening day of the season drubbing in The FA Cup against them same opponents.

Those hopes looked very unlikely as the visitors took the lead as early as the second minute. Sam Jackson’s initial corner was cleared but when the ball was played back to Jackson, he delivered an excellent near post cross that was headed home by Nick Seabourne.

Wulfs reacted well and went close to an immediate reply with Aaron Bishop dragging a shot wide and Ben McLean seeing a header bounce off the top of the bar and post.

Warwick always looked dangerous on the counter attack and went close to extending their lead just after the half hour mark. Jackson was again the creator, playing a good ball forward to Seabourne who cut inside on to his right foot before firing a shot just wide of the far post.

Wulfs went back on to the front foot as Spray cut in from the left and hit a fierce shot that the keeper did well to push wide.

HALF TIME: AFC Wulfrunians 0 Racing Club Warwick 1

The second half saw Wulfs come out firing on all cylinders and really taking the game to their opposition who, to their credit, stood up well to the constant pressure.

McLean has a good chance when he spooned a shot wide after good work down the right by Gratias Katega while Jack Till was proving to be a real threat down the left. He forced a good save from keeper Brandon Ganley after being slotted through by Mat Johnson.

Till caused problems again shortly after when his low ball in from the left was sliced just past his own post by Fortune Maphosa.

Just when it looked as though the visitors were going to hold on for all three points, Wulfs found a leveller a minute from time. Ben Jevons played a long ball over the top and Till shrugged off his marker before slotting the ball across the keeper and just inside the post.

It almost hit better as Dominic Dell twice went close to finding an injury time winner, firstly curling a shot just just wide from the edge of the area and then seeing his header fly straight at the keeper.

FINAL SCORE: AFC Wulfrunians 1 Racing Club Warwick 1
