Wulfs progress in Walsall Senior Cup

WALSALL SENIOR CUP ROUND ONE

AFC WULFRUNIANS V WEDNESFIELD

TUESDAY 29th OCTOBER 2019

Wednesfield, from the Premier Division of the West Midlands (Regional) League made the short trip across Wolverhampton to the CKW Stadium at Castlecroft for round one of the Walsall Senior Cup. Both teams were hopeful of reaching the final to be held in May at the home of Walsall FC.

The first half started with Wednesfield looking lively, relishing the opportunity to put one over higher league opponents. On ten minutes Wulfs had keeper Dan Whitehouse to thank, making an excellent save following a misplaced clearance out of defence and he had to be alert when Wednesfield number eight Liam Matthews tried a cheeky free kick.

The home side were giving away too many free kicks around the edge of their box but Wednesfield were unable to capitalise.

Number eleven for the home side, Khenan Barrett, was causing the Wednesfield defence problems with his speed and close control and he opened the scoring with a curling shot which gave the Wednesfield keeper no chance.

From this point AFC took control of the game and on forty minutes Charles Wilson won a penalty following a neat one two and stepped up to convert the penalty to give AFC a comfortable half time lead.

HALF TIME: AFC Wulfrunians 2 Wednesfield 0

The second half never saw AFC get out of second gear, content to play the ball around quickly, and dominate the play.

Wednesfield tried to apply some pressure but were unable to create a way through and the half looked more like a training session with Wulfs Manager Darren Goodall able to take off some of the senior players in readiness for our home game on Saturday with Gresley.

The game was played in a great spirit, credit to both teams and AFC looked a lot more comfortable to be back on grass, which as we enter November looks in great condition and is a credit to Head Groundsman Matt Clayton.

FINAL SCORE: AFC Wulfrunians 2 Wednesfield 0
