Wulfs downed by Flyers

AFC Wulfrunians travelled the short distance to Lye to play Lye Town; who we beat 2-1 back in November. Lye are currently 15th in the league table but recently completed the double over league leaders Ilkeston Town who could win the league when they visit Castlecroft on the 30th March, our “Sponsor Day”.

Much as last week the game started in poor conditions with AFC facing a strong wind. Lye were on the front foot from the off and went ahead on three minutes with Luke Carter heading home unchallenged from a freekick.

AFC just weren’t in it and fell further behind on nine minutes when the very lively Lye centre forward Nicky Turton raced through to slot into the corner.

After ten minutes AFC replaced centre half George Taylor with Jack Rowley. AFC began to get more control of the game and it came as no surprise when they reduced the arrears when Jumaane Meggoe lobbed the keeper from a through ball. AFC were now in the game but were on the wrong end of several 50/50 decisions and on the stroke of half time undid all their good work when Lye got a third with an excellent finish from Geoff Hill.

AFC demonstrated their intent by being out early for the start of the second half and were on the front foot from the off. The best move of the game involving interplay between Meggoe, Evans and Webb ended with Webb driving over the bar.

The one way traffic continued and the woodwork then saved Lye on two occasions with Jack Rowley nearly converting a free kick with a header and then Franco being denied following a good effort.

Conditions worsened and AFC could not turn their dominance into goals, and it was clearly going to be “one of those afternoons”. The game ended in a victory for Lye and AFC paid the penalty for a very poor opening ten minutes.
