AFCW 1 Rugby Town 4

There was no festive joy for AFC Wulfrunians as they fell to a comprehensive 4-1 defeat against Rugby Town in their final game before Christmas. Despite a battling second half performance, goals either side of half time for the visitors took the game away from Wulfs.
The first chance of the game did not fall until the 33rd minute, when Wulfs’ Nicky Turton was put through by Joe Daley, but the striker’s touch was too heavy and Niall Cooper dived on the ball.
Rugby took the lead shortly after, as the game began to open up. David Kolodynski picked the ball up on the left and fired a ball into the area that skidded off the surface and somehow found its way through Joe Morris and into the net.
Their second came on the stroke of half time. With Wulfs giving the ball away on the halfway line, Ruben Wiggins-Thomas broke quickly into the area and squared it to Kolodynski, who took the ball round the ‘keeper to grab his second of the game.
Despite a double substitution at half time for the hosts, Rugby added a third nine minutes after the break to put the game out of reach. Stuart Hendrie threaded Wiggins-Thomas in behind the defence, and he coolly slid the ball under the ‘keeper.
Hendrie added another assist for his team’s fourth goal, as he delivered a cross from the right that was turned into his own net by Wulfs’ Jacob Barnes.
Although the home side had plenty of chances in the second half, it was not until the dying moments that they grabbed a consolation goal. Mitch McDonald’s cross was turned in from close range by Callum Parker, with the referee calling time shortly after.
Wulfrunians’ tough festive period continues against high-flying Sporting Khalsa on Boxing Day before hosting Lye Town on Saturday.
