Long Eaton United 1 AFCW 0

AFC Wulfrunians slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Long Eaton United. Shaun Rickford’s second half strike was enough to secure all three points for the home side.

In a first half devoid of goalmouth action, the only real sight of goal came shortly before the interval when Tom Ray headed Brodie Williams’ free kick wife of the target.

The second half was a bit more lively. Wulfs were the first to show when Jacob Barnes freed Callum Parker but his attempted lob fell into the keeper’s hands.

The home side showed their first bit of attacking threat when Zak Godson cut in from the right and struck a left footed shot that saw John Bateman get down well to save.

Will Coutts then went close for the home side when he danced past two men before seeing his low shot cleared off the line.

Long Eaton’s increased pressure bore dividends as they opened the scoring in the 68th minute when Godson’s low ball across goal was parried but Rickford was on hand to fire home the loose ball.

Wulfs pushed for an equaliser and should have levelled in the 77th minute when Williams’ free kick bounced back off the keeper’s chest and substitute Jumaane Meggoe followed up but somehow fired over from four yards with the goal gaping and that was Wulfs’ last chance gone.
