AFCW 3 Shawbury United 0 (FA Cup)

AFC Wulfrunians kicked off the 2017/18 season in fine style with a 3-0 victory over fellow MFL side Shawbury United to progress to the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Nicky Turton’s 36th minute strike and second half goals from Jake Webb and Jordan Harrison gave Wulfs a comfortable passage.

It was Wulfs who made all of the early running with Webb in the thick of the action, first delivering a low cross into the area that caused problems before the ball ricocheted into the keepers arms and then when he blocked the keeper Ian Havard’s attempted clearance before seeing his goalbound effort saved by the keeper’s outstretched leg.

Craig Stevens then fired over after bursting through on a one-on-one and Webb was again foiled by a good save before Wulfs finally made the breakthrough in the 36th minute. Brodie Williams sent in a dangerous low ball into the area which was converted at the far post by Nicky Turton.

Shawbury’s task of getting back into the tie was then made even more difficult when striker Josh Thomas was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident.

Their chances were further hampered as Wulfs extended their lead shortly before the hour mark when Webb finally got his deserved goal firing home a Rees Wedderburn cut back.

Substitute Jordan Harrison put the icing on the cake in the final minute, heading home from close range after Wedderburn’s cross had been headed back across goal by Webb.
