An afternoon of bright sunshine was not enough to encourage either side into goalmouth action, as AFC Wulfrunians and Rocester played out a scrappy goalless draw which saw the visitors earn a potentially vital point in the battle to avoid relegation.

Wulfs again showed their increased resilience, as they kept a third successive clean sheet. John Bateman made some important saves in goal for Wulfs but it was the defensive effort of the team as a whole that prevented the hosts from ever really having a clear-cut chance.

The best chance of the first half well Wulfs’ way, thanks to an impressive flowing move. Jake Webb picked the ball up in the middle of the field and played a perfectly weighted ball to Craig Gregg on the right, he carried the ball into the area but Richard Froggatt was on hand to deny him as he made a good save with his feet.

Rocester responded with a good chance of their own 10 minutes before the break. Skipper Martin Smyth managed to find enough space in the box to bring down a floated cross, but Bateman managed to gather as Smyth made an attempt to go around the ‘keeper.

The best chance of the second half also fell the hosts’ way, as the dangerous Callum Riddell continued to threaten Wulfs. He managed to get behind the defence but was again denied by the impressive Bateman.

Wulfrunians will look to continue their three match unbeaten run, that has come on the back of solid defensive play, when they host Shepshed Dynamo next week in another important game that could go a long way towards deciding the fate of the teams at the bottom of the table.

AFC Wulfrunians: Bateman, McDonald, Caines, Sedgemore, Hill, Waterhouse, Gregg, Ellis (Brown 33), Turton (Grainger 80), Webb, Hunt.
