AFC Wulfrunians suffered a major setback in their quest for Premier Division survival as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against fellow strugglers Shawbury United. Craig Gregg’s late goal proved nothing more than a consolation after the home side had opened up a two-goal lead.
The day got worse still for Wulfs after the late sending off for Richard Palmer following an altercation.
The game was slow to get going with Jake Webb’s shot from distance comfortable saved by the Shawbury keeper while at the other end, John Bateman had to tip a Stuart Ellis shot over the crossbar.
The game came to life in the 16th minute as the home side took the lead when Tom Taylor headed home a left wing corner.
Shawbury should have doubled their lead shortly after when they broke out following a Wulfs corner a Steve Faux was sent clear but he dragged his shot wide of the target.
Shawbury came out brighter at the start of the second half and had a goal chalked off for offside before Ellis saw his shot deflect just over the crossbar.
They did, however, score a killer second goal in the 64th minute when Ellis picked out former Wulf Josh Thomas and he made no mistake with a low finish past the keeper.
It got worse for Wulfs when an innocuous looking challenge led to a bout of push and shove from which both Richard Palmer and the home side’s Steve Faux were sent off.
Wulfs fought hard to get back into the game and grabbed a lifeline six minutes from time when Demetri Brown chased a ball over the top and cut it back for Craig Gregg to slam home from 14 yards out.
Wulfs pushed for a late equaliser and had a great chance in injury time when Joel Caines’ diagonal ball into the area was headed back across goal by John Hill. Demetri Brown charged on to the loose ball but couldn’t get enough on it to hit the target as the ball went wide.
This result leaves Wulfs in a perilous position.
