AFCW 1 Sporting Khalsa 3

AFC Wulfrunians will hope for improvements in the New Year, as they ended 2016 with a defeat at home to Sporting Khalsa. Despite this being Wulfs’ fourth consecutive loss, there were enough signs in the first half to show that 2017 may be more positive.

The visitors took the lead after 22 minutes. Craig Bannister fired his free kick into the wall, only to fire into the bottom corner as the ricochet fell straight back to him.

Their lead was doubled within five minutes, courtesy of a long throw-in tactic that troubled Wulfs all afternoon. Jonathan Haynes launched his throw into the area and David Meese beat Josh Moreton with a header at his near post.

A period of better play at the end of the first half culminated with Wulfs looking likely to get back into the game, as they pulled a goal back. A poor defensive header left Marvin Robinson in space inside the area and he made no mistake as he fired past Tom Turner with a first-time effort.

However, Khalsa killed the game off after 64 minutes, as they converted a penalty that took the game beyond a Wulfs side that was depleted by injury in the second half.

Yusifu Ceesay ran onto a long ball over the top of the Wulfs defence and got there just before Moreton to knock it past the ‘keeper and win a penalty. Meese stepped up to the spot and smashed his penalty straight down the middle to add his second and put the game out of sight.

Wulfs had one late chance to add a consolation goal, as Tom Grainger latched onto an impressive flick by Jake Webb, but his shot fell a long way wide.

The attention for Wulfrunians will now turn to 2017 in the hope that it can provide some better results for them. This begins on Monday, as they travel to Walsall Wood for an important league fixture.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Gregg, Caines, Ganderton, Hill, Barnes, Brown (Minto 25), Colley, Robinson (Grainger 45), Webb (Davies 75), Hunt.
