Lye Town 2 AFCW 0

A battling first half performance was not enough for AFC Wulfrunians to claim any points against high flying Lye Town. The hosts’ strength in depth showed in the second half, as they pulled away despite the difficult conditions and a lack of chances.

Josh Moreton was called into action early on for Wulfs, as he made a fine save to deny Sam Tye after some excellent build-up play had put him through on goal.

Wulfs’ best chance of the first half came when Demetri Brown benefitted from a poorly cleared free kick, but he fired his effort from inside the area straight at the ‘keeper.

The game could have gone very differently had Wulfs taken the lead at the start of the second half. A Jake Sedgemore free kick found its way to Tom Ray at the back post, his header looped over the ‘keeper but he somehow managed to hook it back off the line.

Lye then took the lead halfway through the second half as Moreton palmed away a free kick straight to the feet of Jack Pearlman, who made no mistake as he slotted home from close range.

Their lead was doubled shortly after, as they took the game out of Wulfs’ reach. A low cross took an unfortunate bounce and caught Moreton off guard, his unconvincing save fell to Tye and he placed his shot into the bottom corner to secure the win.

Wulfrunians will now look to regroup before their run of Christmas fixtures, which begins on Boxing Day as they host Brocton.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Perks (McDonald 74), Caines, Sedgemore, Hill, McFarlane, Gregg, Colley, Brown (Minto 85), Webb (Grainger 57), Ray.
