AFCW 2 Brocton 3

Festive fun was cut short for AFC Wulfrunians as two late goals gave bottom of the table Brocton a vital three points. Despite twice being ahead in the match, Wulfs were powerless to stop an impressive comeback from the visitors.

Wulfs took the lead after just five minutes, courtesy of a spectacular goal by Mitch McDonald. Joe Colley’s ball forward was only half cleared to McDonald, who hit a dipping volley into the net from 30 yards out.

The visitors grabbed an equaliser at the half hour mark. Jack Edwards benefitted from some fortunate bounce and then beat two defenders before firing in from the edge of the area.

McDonald very nearly turned provider as Wulfs hunted for a goal before the break. His brilliant free kick was glanced towards goal by Demetri Brown- his header looked destined for the bottom corner only for Aiden Stone to somehow claw it away.

Wulfrunians retook the lead midway through the second half. They were awarded a penalty after Jake Webb was brought down following an impressive run and Kyle Brady stepped up to the spot to calmly finish.

Both of Brocton’s late goals came in fortunate circumstances, as they turned the game on its head in the final five minutes.

Their equaliser came courtesy of Charlie Sneddon, as his mishit first time shot took a couple of deflections before slowly rolling past Liam Stanton, who had been wrong-footed.

The winner came in the final minutes of injury time as the game looked set to peter out into a draw. Charles Weston-Hayles latched onto a ball inside the area and saw his shot saved by Stanton, only for the rebound to strike a Wulfs defender and roll into the empty net.

Wulfrunians will look to bounce back from this disappointing defeat on New Year’s Eve, when they will be looking to cause an upset against high-flyers Sporting Khalsa.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Stanton, Perks, McFarlane, Ellis, Hill, Ray, McDonald, Colley ( ), Brown ( ), Brady ( ), Webb.
