Quorn 3 AFCW 1 AET (FA Vase)

AFC Wulfrunians were made to rue missed chances, as they were eliminated from the F.A. Vase after an extra time defeat to fellow Midland League side Quorn. Despite leading at half time and looking the more likely side to find a winner in 90 minutes, Wulfs could not hold on in extra time as two quick-fire goals sent the hosts through.

Wulfs came out of the blocks quickly and had a number of chances in the opening 15 minutes. Jake Webb was instrumental to Wulfs’ early dominance, and continued to be a threat throughout the game.

He deservedly put his side in the lead after 11 minutes as he controlled a brilliant ball from Brady with his chest and then volleyed superbly past the ‘keeper.

The winger almost added a second for the visitors just four minutes later. He showed great balance to take the ball past three players before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the area that rattled the post before bouncing clear.

Quorn came back into the game at the start of the second half and grabbed an equaliser. Nathan Dale’s free kick struck the post and the rebound was poked in by Josh Selway from close range.

Wulfs’ best chances to grab a winner came in quick succession. Webb had a shot tipped over by the ‘keeper before Mitch McDonald saw his effort strike the bar after he had taken the ball past a defender.

The hosts took the lead in the second period of extra time as Nick Goold crossed to the unmarked Liam Turner, and he powerfully headed home.

They sealed the victory with four minutes to go as Goold got a goal of his own after Turner’s shot was saved.

Wulfrunians will look to bounce back and continue their good run in the league, as their next fixture will see them visiting high-flying Westfields.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Bateman, Perks, Caines, Gregg, Hill, Barnes, Brown (McDonald 66), Rose-Laing, Robinson (Minto 94), Webb, Brady (McFarlane 98).
