AFCW 3 Loughborough Uni 2

An impressive attacking display helped AFC Wulfrunians to a 3-2 victory over Loughborough University. Despite allowing the visitors back into the game in the late stages, Wulfs always appeared in control and were a constant threat to the Loughborough defence.

It took just 10 minutes for Wulfs to grab the first goal. Kyle Brady harassed the Loughborough defence and latched onto a very poor pass back to the ‘keeper- he made no mistake as he slotted the ball through the legs of James Stallan.

The visitors’ best chance of the first half came when the ball fell to Jason Davis inside the area, but John Bateman was on hand to push away the striker’s powerful effort.

Wulfs grabbed two goals in two minutes during the early stages of the second half to put the game beyond reach. Mitch McDonald added his side’s second goal of the game when he curled a fantastic effort into the top corner after receiving a cross from Demetri Brown.

Brady added his second of the game a minute later, as he was again the beneficiary of a mistake by the visitors. Jake Webb stole the ball on the halfway line and put Brady in behind, who again showed composure to place the ball into the bottom corner.

The introduction of Ben Ward-Cochrane had provided the visitors with some much-needed urgency going forward in the final 10 minutes. It was his cross from the right that gave them their first goal, as it came into a dangerous area and was unfortunately turned into his own net by Tom Ray.

Ward-Cochrane then got a deserved goal of his own in stoppage time, as he poked home from close range at the second attempt from inside the six-yard box, but this was merely a consolation.

This results sees Wulfrunians leapfrog the visitors in the table, and they will look to continue their good form when they entertain Walsall Wood in Tuesday’s League Cup clash.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Bateman, Perks, Caines, Gregg (Ganderton 69), Ray, McFarlane, Brown (Minto 73), Colley, Brady (Grainger 69), Webb, McDonald.
