AFCW 2 Heanor Town 0

An impressive second half performance earned AFC Wulfrunians all three points in a vital clash with Heanor Town. After a slow first half, Wulfs showed great fight in the second half to secure the result; with goals from Jake Sedgemore and Jamie King being enough for a first win since September.

The first chance of the game did not come until the 25th minute, but it fell Wulfs’ way- Craig Gregg squared the ball to Jamie King, only for his powerful effort to fall just wide.

King’s chance seemed to spark his side into life, as a prolonged spell of pressure followed. Jake Webb met a low cross from Joel Caines but saw his shot blocked as it looked destined for the bottom corner.

Wulfs’ ‘keeper Liam Stanton was called into action twice in quick succession shortly after half time. Scott Stanisland broke free on the right but Stanton was on hand to palm it behind for a corner. He then denied him again just five minutes later with another fine save.

The home side managed to stay resilient under this increased pressure after the break and eventually reaped the rewards, courtesy of a quick counter attack. Gregg took the ball into the box on the right-hand side and was brought down by Ryan Seale. Sedgemore showed great composure as he slotted the subsequent penalty into the corner.

A superb move by Webb helped Wulfs move out of sight with five minutes remaining. He picked the ball up on the halfway line and dribbled all the way to the edge of the box before curling a perfectly-placed cross onto the head of King, who made no mistake as he headed past the ‘keeper.

Wulfrunians will look to use this result as a platform to improving their form, as they showed an impressive desire that they will now look to take into Tuesday’s trip to St. Andrews.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Stanton, Gregg, Caines, Sedgemore, Ray, Barnes, Brown (Webb ), Rose-Laing (Dodd ), Brady (Minto ), King, Ray.
