Coleshill Town 2 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians slipped to s 2-1 defeat away at Coleshill Town, despite a much improved performance. Jake Webb’s second half goal wasn’t enough to earn Wulfs any points as a goal in either half sealed the win for the home side.

The opening stages of the game were very even as Demetri Brown twice went close for Wulfs while at the other end Gio Dainty saw his shot cleared off the line by Marcus Jackson and Danny Campbell was foiled by a smart save from Danny Tipton.

The all-important breakthrough came for the home side six minutes before the interval. Dean Rathbone played a neat ball through the defence and Chris Sterling applied a cool finish.

Coleshill should have doubled their lead early in the second half when Sterling released Campbell and he rounded the keeper before completely missing his kick with the goal at his mercy.

They were made to pay for this miss as Wulfs equalised in the 58th minute, Webb showed great awareness to intercept an attempted back pass, round the keeper and roll the ball into the empty net from a narrow angle.

Parity was short lived as the home side went back in front in the 66th minute. Substitute Sam Atkins drove into the penalty area and went down under challenge, Rathbone made no mistake with the resulting penalty.

Wulfs continued to push forward and the home side were grateful to keeper Paul Hathaway making a superb double save, first he tipped substitute Josh Thomas’ shot on to the post and then he somehow pushed Brown’s follow up effort around the post.

Thomas then went close with a low shot that flew just wide of the post and fellow sub Ryan Nesbitt saw his injury time effort tipped over the bar before the referee finally called time on the game.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Jackson (Minto 78), Caines, Sedgemore, McFarlane, Barnes, Gregg, Ellis, Cooke (Thomas 56), Webb (Nesbitt 85), Brown.
