Alvechurch 3 AFCW 1

Ryan Nesbitt’s first ever goal for the club proved to be a mere consolation as AFC Wulfrunians went down 3-1 away at pre-season title favourites Alvechurch.

The home side were quickest out of the blocks with Jamie Spencer going close to opening the scoring very early on with a glancing header that slid just past the post.

The breakthrough came in the 5th minute when new signing Michael McGrath’s dangerous near post corner deflected in off a Wulfs defender for an own goal.

Alvechurch dominated the opening stages but Wulfs slowly began to work their way in to the game with Demetri Brown and Craig Gregg both trying their luck before home keeper Charlie Price was forced to make an excellent save, tipping Brown’s angled shot over the bar.

The home side hit back with Andy Nicol firing a superb left foot volley just over the angle of the goal and James Spray forcing Danny Tipton into making a great save from his 30 yard free kick.

The decisive moment of the game came on the stroke of half time as Alvechurch doubled their lead courtesy of a powerful header by Spencer from another pin-point Nicol corner.

Wulfs continued to battle gamely in the second half with Callum McFarlane’s long range shot tipped over the bar by Price and substitute Jake Webb’s shot scraping the outside of the post.

The home side regained control with Spencer forcing another good save from Tipton and Connor Deards seeing his effort cleared off the line by McFarlane before they did eventually extend their lead seven minutes from time in spectacular fashion. Ryan Winwood delivered a fine cross from the right which was converted in acrobatic fashion by Nicol.

Wulfs refused to give up and grabbed a consolation in the final minute when Mitch McDonald’s low cross was excellently controlled and turned home by Nesbitt.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Ray (Webb 47), Caines, Rose-Laing, McFarlane, Barnes, McDonald, Gregg, Robinson, Nesbitt, Brown (Stewart 66).
