AFCW 2 Rocester 2

A last minute equaliser earned AFC Wulfrunians a point in a tightly contested Midland Football League class with Rocester. In an end-to-end game a draw was a fair result with both sides having their fair share of chances.

Wulfs had the first chance of the game as Mitch McDonald’s cross fell to Ryan Nesbitt around the penalty spot, but his shot was well saved by Richard Froggatt.

The visitors took the lead after 24 minutes- Martin Smyth’s mis-hit shot fell into the path of Callum Riddell, and he rounded Danny Tipton before firing into the empty net.

An immediate reply was almost on the card for Wulfs as Marcus Jackson’s powerful run took him past two players but his shot grazed the outside of the post before falling wide.

Wulfs did finally grab an equaliser, however, two minutes before the break. Jake Webb showed great patience to thread a perfect ball through for Demetri Brown, who placed his effort past Froggatt.

Five minutes after the break Rocester retook the lead in fortunate circumstances. Rob Ritchie-Smith’s cross from the right was deflected high into the air and evaded any kind of meaningful touch before somehow ending up in the back on the net.

It took Wulfs until the final minute of the game to grab an equaliser, courtesy of a wonderful second goal by Brown. He took the ball past four players after picking it up just outside the area and then fired into the roof of the net.

Tipton pulled off a dramatic late save to earn Wulfrunians a point in his 400th appearance for the club. Ridell looked set to win the game for Rocester but the ‘keeper dived low to his left to deny him.

Wulfs now look to take the momentum of their late goal into their next game, as they host St Andrews on Saturday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Caines, Jackson, Morrison, Barnes, McDonald, Sedgemore, Brown, Nesbitt, Webb.
