AFCW 1 Walsall Wood 0

A solid defensive showing from AFC Wulfrunians allowed them to survive the late pressure that Walsall Wood put on them in their search for an equaliser, as Wulfs ran out 1-0 winners. Neither side created many chances, but it was Wulfs that grabbed the victory courtesy of a second half strike from Jamie King.

The only real chance of the first half fell Wulfs’ way, as Demetri Brown picked the ball up on the left and skipped inside before hitting a powerful shot from long range that was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Curtis Pond.

Brown had a pair of chances shortly after the break as he twice used his pace to get in behind the defence but missed the target both times as he fired into the side netting.

Wulfs eventually took the lead on 61 minutes after a period of sustained pressure. Mitch McDonald picked the ball up on the right hand side and found King with a cross, who powerfully struck the ball into the very top corner and gave the ‘keeper no chance.

The visitors had their first real chance out of nowhere shortly after the goal. Substitute Drew Aiton picked the ball up 25 yards out and hit a vicious effort that rattled the crossbar before bouncing safely away.

Josh Moreton pulled off a vital save late on to secure the win for Wulfs. Corey Currithers broke free on the right hand side and found enough space to fire a low cross in for Karl Edwards, but his close range effort was denied by Moreton’s instinctive save.

Wulfrunians will look to continue their strong defensive performances on Wednesday as they take the trip to Quorn for another league fixture. Wulfs have already recorded two league clean sheets this season, a feat that they did not achieve until November last season.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Ray, Caines, Rose-Laing, McFarlane, Barnes, McDonald, Sedgemore, Robinson (Brady 79), King (Gregg 87), Brown (Harrison 90).
