AFCW 2 Boldmere St Michaels 0

AFC Wulfrunians kicked off the new season in style with a 2-0 win at home to Boldmere St Michaels. A goal in each half from Marvin Robinson and a solid defensive display ensured they got off to the perfect start.

Wulfs started brightly with Jamie King just inches away from converting a Jake Webb cross and Boldmere defender Nicolas Cleary clearing off his own line after the ball had been inadvertently deflected goalwards by a Mikes defender.

The bright start was rewarded as Wulfs took a 14th minute lead. King delivered an inviting corner from the right which Robinson met with a superb downward header to net at the far post.

King then pounced on a defensive slip and cut inside but fired his shot straight at the keeper before Boldmere spurned a great chance to equalise when Stuart Capaldi broke free of the defence but saw his attempted lob clawed away by keeper Josh Moreton.

Wulfs came out with all guns firing at the start of the second half with Webb firing just over the bar, Robinson firing a low shot into the side-netting and King heading wide when completely unmarked six yards out.

Boldmere then had a couple of chances to level, first when Joe Halsall shot wide after being picked out by Joe Smith and then when substitute Jack Skinner dragged his shot wide after the ball dropped to him at the end of a scramble on the edge of the area.

The three points were secured in injury time when Robinson latched on to Craig Gregg’s long ball over the top and calmly lobbed the ball over Mikes keeper Lewis Fenney.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Ray, Caines, Sedgemore, Dodd, Barnes, Gregg, Shepherd (Rose-Laing 78), Robinson, King (Brown 78), Webb (McDonald 85).
