Shepshed Dynamo 4 AFCW 2

Jamie King twice put AFC Wulfrunians in the lead away at Shepshed Dynamo but it proved not to be enough as the Leicestershire side ran out 4-2 winners.

An open start to the game saw the home side go close when Levi Porter struck a fierce shot that was tipped over the bar by Josh Moreton while Chris Lait had a great chance at the other end when the ball fell to him 12 yards out but he fired over the bar.

It was Wulfs who made the breakthrough in the 9th minute when Ben Jevons’ low drive from the edge of the area was pushed away by keeper Jack Drury but King was on hand to fire home the loose ball.

Shepshed should have been level just five minutes later, Matt Langham produced some good work down the left before squaring across goal where Sam Moore somehow failed to convert from close range.

The game turned on its head from the 25 minute mark. First Wulfs defender Chris Waterhouse had to leave the field for treatment. While he was off Shepshed grabbed an equaliser with Michael Reeve blocking an attempted clearance and seeing the ball loop over the keeper and into the net.

With Waterhouse still off the pitch it got worse for Wulfs when Reeve broke in behind the defence and was brought down by Moreton, the keeper receiving a red card to add to his woes. Danny Tipton finally came on to replace the stricken Waterhouse and his first job was to watch Liam Read fire the resulting penalty wide of the target.

Despite being down to ten men, Wulfs continued to cause problems and they regained the lead four minutes before the interval, Lait fired a low, hard ball across goal which wasn’t properly dealt with by the Tom Rigby and King nipped in to stab home from close range.

It was almost 3-1 at the start of the second half when Demetri Brown showed good pace and strength to outmuscle his marker before striking a low shot across goal that came back off the far post.

Shepshed drew level in the 51st minute, Read carried the ball across the edge of the area before firing in a low shot that was well saved by Tipton but Reeve pounced to force home the loose ball.

Wulfs were holding on well but all of their hard work was undone as the home side scored two well struck goals in the space of a minute. First Alex Roberts curled a great shot in off the post in the 77th minute and then Read repeated the dose within 60 seconds.

Overall it was a decent performance from Wulfs but the dismissal of Moreton made it an uphill task but they will be hoping to put that right at home to Coventry Sphinx on Saturday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Stewart (Aulak 66), Howells, Sedgemore, Waterhouse (D Tipton 31), Hunt, McDonald (Gregg 79), Lait, Brown, King, Jevons.
