AFCW 3 Coventry Sphinx 1

AFC Wulfrunians ended their home league campaign with a 3-1 win over Coventry Sphinx in a very entertaining encounter at the Castlecroft Stadium.

It was Wulfs who started brightest and deservedly took the lead in the 5th minute, Jake Sedgemore picking out a great pass to Demetri Brown who coolly slotted into the bottom corner.

Jamie King then went close to extending the lead with a low shot just past the post before Sphinx showed their first bit of attacking intent with Luke Downes sidestepping his marker before firing a low shot that saw keeper Danny Tipton get down well to save.

King then went close for Wulfs again with another low shot that had Ash Malhotra scrambling across goal to tip wide of the post at full length.

Sphinx got back on level terms on the half hour mark when striker Keiran Nesbitt produced a sublime chip from the corner of the area that gave keeper Tipton no chance.

Kyle Brady had a great chance to put Wulfs back ahead just before the interval after being picked out by Craig Gregg but his first time shot sailed over the bar.

The visitors came out firing at the start of the second half and Tipton had to make saves from Ryan Quinn, Garfield Robinson and Nesbitt while Jean Dakouri fired a shot just over the bar.

Chris Waterhouse went close at the other end when he diverted Sedgemore’s free kick towards goal but Malhotra was alert enough to push the ball around the upright.

Wulfs began to get a grip on the game and Brown went close to grabbing his second in the 70th minute when his shot was tipped on to the post by Malhotra but he wasn’t to be denied a minute later after being picked out by a great reverse ball from Jordan Perks; the striker firing low past the keeper to put Wulfs back into the lead.

The big striker then completed a fine hat-trick four minutes from time when he received a short pass from Ash Stewart and powered past his marker before slotting low past the keeper.

Wulfs now move on to their final game of the season away at Stourport Swifts on Tuesday night.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: D Tipton, Perks, Howells, Sedgemore, Jevons, Waterhouse, Gregg (McDonald 73), Ellis, Brown, King (Webb 85), Brady (Stewart 73).
