AFCW 0 Lye Town 1

An improved showing in the second half was not enough for AFC Wulfrunians, as their five match unbeaten run ended at the hands of local side Lye Town. After falling behind in the first half, Wulfs fought back after the break but could not find a crucial goal that would have levelled the game.

The visitors went in front after just 14 minutes in rather fortunate circumstances. Wulfs cleared a corner to the edge of the area, Alex Dallison fired it straight back towards the goal and was deflected in by Ryan Rowe, catching Josh Moreton off guard, before rolling into the bottom corner.

The first chance for Wulfrunians didn’t come until the 26th minute; Ben Jevons threaded a ball through for Jamie King, he ran through beyond the defence but saw his shot well saved by the feet of Jake Bedford.

Immediately after the break, Wulfs looked capable of levelling the game. Joel Ayettey’s deep cross fell to King and his shot looked destined for goal after beating the ‘keeper, but it was hooked away off the line.

Lye then had a fantastic opportunity to put the game to bed- Simon Williams broke through one-on-one with the ‘keeper and tried to lift it over him, but Moreton managed to keep it out as the ball struck him in the face before going behind for a corner.

Wulfs made a huge push in the final five minutes, as they searched desperately for an equaliser. A long free kick wasn’t cleared effectively and eventually fell to Chris Waterhouse after bouncing around in the area, but he fired well over the bar.

There will be hope for Wulfrunians that they can bounce back straight away, as they host Sporting Khalsa on Tuesday night in another important fixture.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Perks, Sedgemore, Rose-Laing, Waterhouse, Hunt, Gregg, Ganderton (McDonald 66), Ayettey (Webb 66 (Aulak 81)), King, Jevons.
