Rocester 0 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians bounced back from three consecutive games without a win by recording an impressive 1-0 win in the first match of a Bank Holiday double against Rocester. It was a second successive clean sheet for Wulfs, with the developing partnership of Matt Hunt and Ben Jevons looking solid.

Wulfs came out of the blocks quickly and had two early chances- Jake Webb capitalised on a poor clearance from the ‘keeper but fired over from range and then a mazy run from Jamie King saw him beat two players, but he could only fire over from close range.

It was the hosts, however, who came closest to taking the lead in the first half. Rob Ritchie-Smith’s whipped in corner fell to Tom Land at the back post, but his shot was blocked on the line by Mark Ganderton after beating the ‘keeper.

The winning goal came after 66 minutes, as Wulfs’ effort finally got what it deserved. Some excellent skill from Webb allowed him to thread through Jamie King, who ran clear of the defence before getting his shot past Richard Froggatt despite the keeper getting a good hand to it.

Rocester applied pressure in the late stages but did not threaten the Wulfrunians goal too often. Their best chance came three minutes from the end when Land rose to meet a cross but his header was well saved by the calming presence of Josh Moreton.

Wulfs almost took the game out of sight in the lengthy period of additional time played at the end of the 90 minutes. Jake Webb again played a dangerous ball in behind the defence, Craig Gregg ran onto it but hit his shot straight at Froggatt’s feet.

Wulfrunians move straight into the second game of this Bank Holiday double as they host Rocester in the return fixture on Monday. This game will be free entry for all supporters as Wulfs try to record back-to-back league wins.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Ganderton, Sedgemore, Palmer, Jevons, Hunt, Gregg, Ellis, Webb, King (Rose-Laing 88), Howells.
