Coleshill Town 2 AFCW 1

It was a tough afternoon for AFC Wulfrunians, as they fell to Coleshill Town for the second time in a month, despite taking the lead. Wulfs can consider themselves unfortunate, as their battling performance deserved at least a point, but Josh Quaynor’s winner in the dying seconds meant Wulfs left with nothing.

Chances were very hard to come by in the first half, but the best one fell Wulfs’ way. Joel Ayettey made a powerful run down the left-hand side and rolled the ball back to Jamie King, but his shot was diverted over the bar by Paul Hathaway.

The game then seemed to burst into life in the second half, with plenty of fiery challenges flying in. Bookings for Coleshill’s Shane Benjamin and Wulfs’ Jordan Perks were quickly followed by two further bookings for the home side as Craig Milligan and Luke Edwards also entered the referee’s note book.

Wulfs took the lead after 64 minutes, courtesy of King. He made a good run into the area but was brought down by Hathaway as he knocked the ball round him. The midfielder then stepped up and calmly sent Hathaway the wrong way from the spot.

The game changed for Coleshill when they introduced Simeon Cobourne, as he provided them with a much-needed spark. Cobourne levelled the game with 15 minutes remaining as he broke through before firing past Josh Moreton.

Late on, Quaynor fired a warning shot as he struck a free kick from just outside the area that crashed back off the crossbar before being cleared to safety.

Cobourne then had a hand in the winning goal; his aggressive run deep into Wulfs’ half led to him being brought down on the edge of the area. Deep into stoppage time, Quaynor stepped up to take the free kick and curled it brilliantly into the bottom corner, just out of Moreton’s reach.

Wulfrunians will be looking to immediately bounce back from this defeat next weekend, as they host new league leaders Alvechurch.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Moreton, Waterhouse (Howells 83), Rose-Laing, Jevons, Hunt, Gregg, Ganderton (Palmer 71), Ayettey (Webb 85), King, Ellis.
