AFCW 1 Rocester 1

AFC Wulfrunians failed to make it back-to-back victories in a Bank Holiday double against Rocester as they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Castlecroft Stadium. Despite taking the lead and dominating much of the game, Wulfs’ failure to capitalise on their chances meant they shared the points with their visitors.

The visitors provided the first action of the game, as skipper Tom Land’s effort from a cross was ruled out after the referee adjudged that he handled the ball into the net.

Wulfs’ best chance in the early exchanges came courtesy of the partnership between Jake Webb and Jamie King, who had found similar success in the previous game. King curled a fantastic ball behind the defence that left Webb one-on-one with Froggatt, but he hit his shot straight at the ‘keeper.

Liam Shaw should have put Rocester ahead after 33 minutes, as he met Sam Griffiths’ cross, but he headed over an empty net from just three yards out.

Five minutes before the break, Wulfs took the lead. A powerful run from Joel Ayettey took him to the byline and he played a powerful ball across to King who poked it into the roof of the net with a first-time effort.

Ayettey almost added a goal of his own midway through the second half. Froggatt came to claim a Webb corner but misjudged the flight and allowed Ayettey a free header, but the effort was hooked off the line before being cleared.

The visitors grabbed an equaliser 15 minutes from time, after Wulfs had struggled to find an important second goal. Troy Carty’s deep cross found Shaw at the back post, and he made amends for his earlier miss by sending Josh Moreton the wrong way with a well-placed header.

The games keep coming for Wulfrunians as they continue with their hectic schedule- they now host Heanor Town on Wednesday where they will hope to match the performance that saw them earn a point in last week’s away fixture.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton (Moreton 45), Waterhouse (Aulak 81), Perks, Rose-Laing, Jevons, Hunt, Gregg, Palmer, Ayettey (Marsh 84), Webb, King.
