Loughborough University 5 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians slumped to a 5-1 defeat away at a very impressive Loughborough University. Although the final scoreline was slightly harsh on Wulfs, the home side were well worthy of their victory.

Loughborough were on the front foot from the off and twice went close early on, first when Ben Ward-Cochrane couldn’t quite convert Alun Webb’s deep cross and then when Jeremiah Dasaolu struck the inside of the post when put in the clear by Ward-Cochrane.

The inevitable opening goal finally came in the 16th minute when Webb latched on to a fine diagonal ball from Josh Hill and fired powerfully past debutant keeper Jamie Bostock.

The lead was doubled ten minutes later as Ward-Cochrane got himself on the scoresheet with a direct free kick from 22 yards out.

The Students continued to go for the jugular and extended their lead on the half hour mark when the impressive Hill fired low into the corner from just outside the area.

After being under the cosh for most of the half, Wulfs were given a lifeline three minutes before the interval when Jamie King headed home Kyle Minto’s cross.

A half time change for Wulfs saw Kyle Brady introduced and he went close to reducing the arrears even further when his shot was somehow deflected wide for a corner.

After enjoying their first bit of territorial domination of the game, Wulfs conceded a fourth goal a quarter of an hour from the end when Jack Poxon picked up a loose ball and fired in from distance.

The home side completed the scoring eight minutes from time with a classic breakaway goal as substitute Cameron Gordon broke clear down the right before squaring unselfishly for Ward-Cochrane to fire home his second of the game.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Bostock, Sedgemore, Aulak (Brady 45), Palmer, Waterhouse, Hunt, Ganderton (Webb 66), Howells, Minto (Ayettey 79), King, Jevons.
