Hereford 1 AFCW 1

A Craig Gregg goal early in the second half helped AFC Wulfrunians pick up a well deserved point away at league leaders Hereford in front of a crowd of 2,404 at Edgar Street.

The early stages were fairly even with a glancing header from Hereford top scorer John Mills forcing debutant keeper Damien Stevens into making a comfortable save while, at the other end, Ricky Anslow turned neatly in the area but scuffed his shot at keeper Harvey Rivers.

The home side were given a great chance to open the scoring when they were awarded a soft 20th minute penalty after Matt Hunt challenged Mills in the area. Fortunately justice was done as Mills struck the resulting spot kick wide of the post.

Wulfs had a good chance to open the scoring just after the half hour when Jake Sedgemore’s long ball found Jamie King who skipped past the last defender only to be denied by a good save from the onrushing Rivers.

The save proved even more important as Hereford took a 34th minute lead. Joe Tumelty picked out Mustapha Bundu with a cross field ball and the wide man ran on and calmly slotted past the keeper.

Bundu spurned a great chance to double the advantage within seconds of the start of the seconds when he shot across the face of goal from a narrow angle and again it proved vital as Wulfs equalised just one minute later. Goalkeeper Rivers’ attempt to clear a back pass struck his own defender and fell into the path of Gregg who fired in from the edge of the area.

The home side enjoyed a lot of pressure in the second half but Wulfs defended for their lives to keep them out. The only real times they found a path to goal came when Bundu looped a header on to the top of the crossbar and a Joel Edwards cross suffered the same fate.

The Bull’s final chance of the game came deep into injury time when a cross from the right was sliced goalwards by a Wulfs defender but Stevens pulled off a magnificent save to keep the ball out and earn Wulfs a point.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Stevens, Perks, Sedgemore, Palmer (Howells 83), Waterhouse, Hunt, Gregg, Ganderton, Anslow (Minto 28), King (Webb 79), Jevons.
