AFCW 3 Dunkirk 0

Goals from Matt Hunt, Rick Anslow and Jamie King helped get AFC Wulfrunians back on the winning trail after a 3-0 win at home to Dunkirk on a freezing cold night at the Castlecroft Stadium.

Wulfs came out of the blocks quickly and went close early on when Ben Jevons diverted a low Craig Gregg cross goalwards but keeper Jake Want got down well to save.

The visiting side made their task much harder when centre half Wisdom Asare was sent off with just twelve minutes of the game gone.

The ten men battled admirably until Wulfs eventually took the lead in the 28th minute. Jake Webb delivered a long diagonal ball into the area which Dunkirk keeper Want attempted to punch clear under heavy pressure from Chris Waterhouse but the loose ball fell to Hunt who prodded home into the unguarded net.

Want then made two excellent saves, first from Anslow when he found himself with just the keeper to beat and the from Ben Jevons who hit a low 25 yard shot that looked in all the way until the keeper somehow managed to push it past around the post.

Wulfs extended their lead six minutes before the interval. Mark Ganderton made a surging run forward before slotting a great ball through to Anslow who finished coolly.

Substitute Kyle Minto went close to finding the net within minutes of his introduction when the big striker latched on to a Gregg ball down the inside left channel and outmuscled his marker before seeing his shot deflect wide for a corner.

Dunkirk continued to defend manfully but couldn’t prevent Wulfs from grabbing a third goal nineteen minutes from the end when Jamie King ran on to a long throughball by Richie Palmer before lobbing the keeper from 20 yards out.

It was a solid if unspectacular performance from Wulfs in somewhat difficult conditions but a lot of credit should go to visitors Dunkirk who fought manfully throughout despite going down to ten men early on.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Aulak, Palmer (Rose-Laing 73), Waterhouse (Minto 43), Hunt, Gregg, Ganderton, Anslow (King 45), Webb, Jevons.
