AFCW 2 Nuneaton Griff 3 (FA Vase)

It was the end of the road in the F.A. Vase for AFC Wulfrunians, as their impressive run was finished by Midland Football League Division One side Nuneaton Griff. Despite recovering from an early two-goal deficit, Wulfs could not find a way through the Nuneaton defence in the second half after again falling behind.

It was a very slow start for Wulfs, as the visitors took the lead after just seven minutes. Lee Hildreth’s cross from deep was met by Ben Ashby, whose header floated over a stranded Danny Tipton and into the net.

Within a minute, this lead was doubled. Anton Astley found plenty of space on the left hand side as he had enough time to casually hit a low cross to Alex Naughton, who made no mistake as he fired home.

Wulfs grabbed a goal back after 10 minutes, courtesy of a goalkeeping error. Jake Sedgemore floated a hopeful ball into the area which should have been easily claimed by Andy Needham, but he spilt it and Kyle Brady pounced on the loose ball and turned it in from close range.

Shortly before the break, Brady added his second to level the game. Sedgemore took the ball from inside his own half and carried it past three players before excellently threading through Brady, who coolly finished.

It was just two minutes after the interval when Nuneaton regained their lead. Astley floated in a corner and Millerchip rose higher than anybody else to head it home.

Although Wulfs worked hard to create openings in the second half, their best chances came in the final few minutes. Craig Gregg delivered a low cross to the near post and Ricky Anslow met it, but Needham pulled off an impressive save with his feet.

Next up for Wulfrunians is more knockout football, as they will look to bounce back when they travel to Lichfield City in the JW Hunt Cup this Tuesday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Perks, Palmer, Hill (Waterhouse 44), Hunt (Brown 77), Webb (Gregg 67), Brady, Anslow, King, Jevons.
