AFCW 1 Hereford 2

It was a day of mixed feelings for AFC Wulfrunians as they provided a record-breaking crowd of 895 with a fantastic afternoon of football, but their impressive performance in challenging conditions was not quite enough to overcome table-toppers Hereford.

The visitors took the lead after 19 minutes, as some early pressure paid off. Ryan Green found some space on the right-hand side and delivered a pinpoint cross to Mike Symons, who rose to head powerfully into the back of the net.

Within two minutes, their lead could have been doubled. Symons latched onto a pass by John Mills and ended up one-on-one with Danny Tipton, but the ‘keeper pressured him into firing wide.

However, Wulfs levelled the game courtesy of a fantastic breakaway goal. Ricky Anslow showed some great skill to get the ball to the byline and his cross floated all the way to Jamie King at the back post, who powerfully struck his first-time effort into the corner.

This goal seemed to give Wulfs an extra spark, as they enjoyed a dominant spell before the break. King capitalised on a mistake at the back but saw his effort tipped over and then Ben Jevons struck the post with a shot on the turn after the resultant corner had been poorly dealt with.

A pair of half time substitutions seemed to settle Hereford down and they looked much better following the interval. Pablo Haysham had their first chance of the half as he struck the bar with a free kick.

It was another Haysham free kick that provided the eventual winner for the visitors. After a cheap foul just outside Wulfs’ area, the midfielder showed his class as he stepped up and lifted his free kick over the wall and past the outstretched hand of Tipton.

Although Wulfrunians applied plenty of pressure in the late stages, it was not to be as they could not find a way through the Hereford defence in the second half.

They now move onto another huge game, as they host Nuneaton Griff in the Fourth Round of the FA Vase.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Perks, Palmer (Ganderton), Hill, Hunt, Webb (Gregg 45), Brady (Minto), Anslow, King, Jevons.
