Sporting Khalsa 2 AFCW 3

The festive celebrations continued for AFC Wulfrunians as they rounded off 2015 with an impressive Boxing Day victory over Sporting Khalsa that sees them move up to sixth in the league.

The best chance of the first half came 15 minutes before the break as Mensah Kinch snuck in behind the Wulfs defence but he fell off balance as he shot and the effort rattled off the crossbar.

Wulfs’ first chance came three minutes into the second half- Craig Gregg capitalised on a mix up in the Khalsa defence but he fired wide as he went through one-on-one.

They then took the lead just four minutes later. Jamie King picked up Vinny Aulak’s ball around the halfway line and drove between three players all the way into the area before firing a low effort past the ‘keeper.

That goal seemed to bring the hosts to life and they equalised within a minute. Marvin Nisbett latched onto a long ball, knocking it past keeper Danny Tipton before firing into the empty net.

However, Wulfs retook the lead courtesy of an impressive counter attack. Ricky Anslow broke with the ball down the left hand side and slipped a fantastic ball across the box for Kyle Brady, who made no mistake as he converted from close range.

Brady almost added his second before being involved in the goal that extended Wulfs’ lead. He broke through on goal but gave himself a difficult angle to score from by rounding the ‘keeper, who managed to save his effort. Brady managed to pick up the rebound and give it to Rich Palmer; he laid off to Anslow who faked his shot a couple of times before firing home.

Nisbett added another goal back for the hosts in the final minute to make things interesting, but Wulfs responded well and managed to remain solid at the back for the final few minutes in order to secure a first league win since November.

Wulfrunians begin 2016 with a difficult challenge, as they look to take the confidence from this win into a home clash with table-toppers Hereford.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Aulak, Palmer, Hill, Hunt, Gregg, Brady (Ganderton 85), Anslow (Minto 84), King (Webb 76), Jevons.
