AFCW 4 Harrowby United 2 (FA Vase)

AFC Wulfrunians progressed to the Second Round of the F.A. Vase as they ran out 4-2 winners over Harrowby United in a lively encounter that went all the way to extra time.

It didn’t take long for the home side to get on top and take the lead. Some impressive pressing by Kyle Brady allowed him to win the ball and thread through Ricky Anslow, who turned his defender one way and then the other before calmly placing his shot in the corner.

Shortly after the break, however, the visitors were level. After Wulfs failed to deal with a set piece, Scott Webb floated a ball in from the left and it fell to Billy Stubbs, who fired past Danny Tipton.

Within three minutes, Wulfs went back in front. Anslow broke clear of the defence but was tripped in the area by Sam Hill, who was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Jamie King stepped up and showed composure as he sent the ‘keeper the wrong way.

Harrowby were then awarded a penalty of their own, as they again found a way back into the game. Scott Webb converted from the spot after John Hill was penalised for a trip on Craig Bridge.

Hill was then sent off with two minutes remaining of normal time, as he was shown a second yellow for going into a challenge with a high foot.

King added his second of the game in extra time; Anslow played the ball to him on the edge of the area and he fired a powerful effort past Jonny Hotson’s outstretched glove.

Jake Webb was then sent off for a second bookable offence, but it didn’t affect Wulfs as Anslow added his second to kill the game off. Craig Gregg played a wonderful ball behind the defence and Anslow was on hand to poke it under the ‘keeper to put his side in the hat for the next round.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Ray (Waterhouse 21), Bridgen (Gregg 90), Ganderton, Hill, Hunt, Webb, Palmer, Anslow, King, Brady (Rose-Laing 90).
