AFCW 1 Stourport Swifts 2

AFC Wulfrunians fell to a frustrating defeat at home to Stourport Swifts in a game where they struggled to gain control and never really got going. After a fairly even first half, the visitors came out firing in the second half and came from behind to secure the victory.

Wulfs had the best of the early chances, as some quick build-up play created an opening. A series of one-touch passes lead to Nathan Rose-Laing being put in by Kyle Minto, but his weak effort was chased down by Ben Maund, who hooked it off the line.

Despite not seeing much of the ball in the first half, Wulfs took the lead just before the break. Jamie King’s corner was punched away by Dominic Richards, but Jake Sedgemore struck a powerful first time effort from the edge of the area that flew in off the post.

The visitors’ domination of the second half possession paid as they levelled shortly after the interval. Jack Bailey’s low cross from the left was neatly turned in at the near post by Maund.

They then took the lead on 77 minutes, courtesy of a great strike by James Hill. A through ball was not properly dealt with by the Wulfs defence and the midfielder’s first-time effort flew past Tim Beech into the top corner.

Wulfs had two excellent opportunities to level in the closing stages, as both Ricky Anslow and Kyle Brady could have scored. However, both strikers failed to equalise as they fired wide inside the area within five minutes of each other.

This was Wulfs’ first home defeat since a 3-0 loss to Highgate United in October, and just their second defeat in November. They now begin December with a midweek trip to face Long Eaton United.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Beech, Ganderton, Perks, Sedgemore, Hill, Hunt, Gregg, Rose-Laing (Anslow 83), Minto (Brady 67), King (Stewart 67), Jevons.
