AFCW 1 Shepshed Dynamo 0

AFC Wulfrunians bounced back from Saturday’s defeat at Lye Town as they battled to a 1-0 victory in a tough encounter with high-flying Shepshed Dynamo. Wulfs looked very solid at the back, but it was their first league clean sheet since the opening day.

Wulfs could easily have taken the lead within the first minute. Jamie King made a good run before playing in Jake Webb on the right, his fantastic cross landed right on the head of Kyle Brady, but the striker’s header from close range flew over.

Jamie King’s early energy was impressive, and it resulted in a goal shortly after. He made a powerful run past two defenders which forced the ‘keeper to rush out and close him down, and he exploited this as he squared to Kyle Brady who was on hand to apply a finish into the empty net.

The visitors’ best chance of the half came just two minutes before the break. Lee Miveld delivered a free kick into the area that was met by Michael Reeve, but Danny Tipton was equal to the powerful header as he kept it out easily.

It was a much tighter second half, with very few chances created, but Dominic Brennan should have equalised for Shepshed with five minutes remaining. He made a powerful run into the box on a counter attack and his curling shot looked destined for the corner, only for Tipton to pull off a fine save to deny him.

Shepshed were reduced to ten-men in the final minutes as they tried to prevent Wulfs adding a goal that would have killed the game off. Substitute Kyle Minto broke clear for the home side but Adam Hohn wrestled him to the ground and was sent off for denying the striker a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Wulfrunians will look to make it back-to-back home wins on Saturday, as they host Long Eaton United in an important league game.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Aulak, Rose-Laing (Waterhouse 88), Hill, Hunt, Webb (Gregg 79), Palmer, Brady (Minto 85), King, Jevons.
