Coventry Sphinx 2 AFCW 3

AFC Wulfrunians can count themselves very fortunate as a last-minute winner gave them a 3-2 victory over Coventry Sphinx, despite throwing away a two goal lead.

The hosts had the best of the early chances as Mitch Thomson got in behind Wulfs’ defence, only to be denied by an excellent save by Danny Tipton. Although the rebound landed at the feet of Jackson Downie, his shot rolled wide.

Wulfs took the lead two minutes before half time courtesy of a well-worked free kick. Jake Sedgemore’s delivery was headed across goal by Ashley Stewart and Chris Waterhouse volleyed past Scott Dutton.

Ricky Anslow doubled the lead straight after the break. A great run by Jake Webb down the left-hand side saw him beat two players and his low cross was poked home by Ricky Anslow.

Richard Blythe could have pulled a goal back for Sphinx as he hit a powerful effort from the edge of the area, but Tipton was equal to it as he pushed it away.

A crazy spell where the hosts scored two goals in two minutes got them back in the game. Lewis McBride made an excellent run down the right and his cross was put in by Lewis Rankin to give them the momentum.

It was another attacking run by McBride that saw his side level the game, as this time his cross was turned in by Blythe.

As it looked like the game was drifting towards a draw; a long kick from Tipton bounced over the Sphinx defence, substitute Kyle Brady latched onto it and fired his shot past Dutton to win the game in the 94th minute.

This win now means that Wulfrunians have 15 points from a possible 18 in the league as they continue their impressive start in the league. Next up for Wulfs is a trip to Highgate United on Wednesday night as they seek another win.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Ray, Bridgen, Sedgemore, Hill, Waterhouse, Ganderton (Rose-Laing 73), Palmer, Anslow (Brady 87), Gregg, Stewart  (Webb 48).
