AFCW 2 Walsall Wood 3

AFC Wulfrunians slipped to an injury time defeat after clawing their way back from 2-0 down, only for a late Drew Aiton strike to turn joy to despair.

The game was slow to get going and the only chance in the opening stages fell to new Wulfs striker Kyle Minto who nipped in to intercept a back pass and rounded the keeper before shooting wide from a narrow angle.

It was Wood who opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Drew Aiton took a quick throw in from the left which put Joey Butlin in the clear and he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.

That lead was doubled six minutes later when a quick break down the left saw the ball cut back to Dan Griffiths whose half-hit shot fell to Craig Deakin and he made no mistake at the far post.

Wulfs thought they had got a foothold back in the game when Minto forced home Jake Webb’s cross but the referee spotted the use of a hand.

Wulfs came out better at the start of the second half but it was the visitors who created the better chances with Griffiths forcing two good saves from debutant keeper Liam Stanton and Aiton seing his fierce shot crash back off the crossbar.

After a spell off pressure, Wulfs finally got back into the game in the 74th minute when Matt Hunt was upended in the area and Jake Sedgemore netted from the spot. It got worse for Wood when skipper Harry Harris was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident following the goal.

With the game drifting in to injury time it looked as though Wulfs had rescued a point when Hunt turned Ben Jevons’ cross past the keeper but Wood cut short the celebrations with virtually the last kick of the game when Aiton punished some hesitant defending by firing home the winner.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Stanton, Perks, Ganderton (Gregg 81), Sedgemore, Hill, Hunt, Webb (Stewart 79), Palmer, Anslow (Martin 81), Minto, Jevons.
