Southam United 0 AFCW 2 (FA Cup)

AFC Wulfrunians progressed to the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup after a comfortable 2-0 victory at Division One side Southam United. Ricky Anslow was the two goal hero as Wulfs set up a home tie against Romulus in a fortnight’s time.

The game was slow to get going and chances were very limited in the opening stages.

The game came to life as Wulfs took the lead in the 26th minute after they produced their first bit of decent football. The ball was worked out wide to Richard Palmer and his cross was helped on by Craig Gregg to Anslow and he forced his way through a couple of challenges before prodding the ball home from close range.

Southam’s only real offering in the first half came when Jack Brighton won possession 25 yards out and fired a low shot straight at keeper Danny Tipton.

Wulfs came out firing at the start of the second half and went close within a minute of the restart when Gregg released Anslow but his low shot cannoned back off the inside of the post.

Two minutes later Gregg put Mark Ganderton in the clear but Saints keeper Tom Cross produced a good save to keep him out.

The decisive second goal finally arrived in the 63rd minute. Jamie King received the ball back from a short throw on the left and produced a superb first time cross which Anslow converted on the half volley at the far post.

King then had the chance to finish the game off when he headed Anslow’s cross just over the bar but Wulfs had already done enough to progress.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Bridgen, Rose-Laing, Hill, Hunt, Gregg (Chatterjee 73), Palmer, Anslow, King (Barrett 80), Ganderton (Howells 63).
