Alvechurch 0 AFC Wulfrunians 3

AFC Wulfrunians got their season off to the perfect start with an excellent 3-0 win away at highly-fancied Alvechurch. Jamie King’s first half strike was added to in the second half by a neat finish by Ricky Anslow and a Jake Sedgemore penalty.

After a cagey opening it was Alvechurch who had the game’s first sight of goal when Nicky Turton headed down to Ryan Winwood but his shot was well saved by Matt Sargeant making his debut in the Wulfs goal.

Ricky Anslow then had a great chance for Wulfs after picking up a loose ball and bearing down on goal but he shot just wide of the upright.

Turton then went close for Alvechurch when his header from a Jack Cresswell corner was kept out before a big scramble ensued while at the other end, John Hill headed a King near post corner just over the bar.

The all-important first goal came for Wulfs on the stroke of half time when a neat move led to the ball being fed out right to Anslow and his far post cross was volleyed home by King.

Momentum appeared to be swinging towards the home side when they were awarded a 56th minute penalty after Matt Hunt had denied Turton a goalscoring opportunity, the big centre half being dismissed for good measure. Karl Edwards took the spot-kick but his effort struck the base of the post before being cleared.

Alvechurch began to build up some pressure with Sargeant reacting smartly to tip Winwood’s shot over the bar but after soaking up the pressure, Wulfs extended their lead in the 73rd minute when Cameron Bridgen’s long ball forward was headed back towards goal by ‘Church defender Andy Parsons but Anslow nipped in to lift the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net.

This goal killed off the home sides hopes and Wulfs added a third goal in injury time when substitute Roy Chatterjee was pulled down by keeper Paul Evans and Sedgemore steeped up to dispatch the resulting penalty.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Sargeant, Perks, Bridgen (Halil 77), Sedgemore, Hill, Hunt, Gregg (Waterhouse 56), Palmer, Anslow, Jevons, King.
