AFCW 3 Loughborough University 1

AFC Wulfrunians made it 3 wins out of 3 in the league with an entertaining 3-1 win at home to Loughborough University. Chris Lait, on debut, fired the home side ahead with Jake Sedgemore and Ricky Anslow adding to the score. Max Herbert replied from the spot for the visitors.

The game got off to a frantic start with Students winger Alun Webb denied by a good save by Danny Tipton as early as the second minute before Anslow went close for Wulfs just 60 seconds later when he was denied by a point blank save by Matthew Donvito.

Sedgemore then went close with a superb free kick from the left corner of the penalty area that struck the underside of the bar and bounced down on the goal line before being collected by the keeper.

The game then settled down and it was the visitors who had the next chance in the 37th minute with Josh Hill’s low 25 yard shot being tipped on to the post by Tipton.

Three minutes later Wulfs took the lead. Anslow stretched the visiting defence before squaring for Lait to fire in a shot that the keeper half saved but the ball had enough pace to roll into the net.

That lead was doubled three minutes into the second half when Mark Ganderton played a ball into Anslow’s feet just inside the area and he was brought down as he tried to turn. Sedgemore made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Loughborough reduced the arrears with a penalty of their own in the 52nd minute when Jeremiah Desaolu was brought down, Herbert clinically converting from the spot.

They should have equalised shortly after when Dasaolu won possession out wide on the left and cut along the byline before cutting back to Herbert but his shot was weak and easily collected by Tipton.

Wulfs punished the visitors with a decisive third goal in the 63rd minute. Craig Gregg played a clever ball over the top allowing Anslow to run on and round the keeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Substitute Ash Stewart had a good chance to extend that advantage but he shot wide from a good position after being set up by Anslow.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Ganderton, Sedgemore, Hill, Lait (Rose-Laing 69), Gregg (Stewart 74), Palmer, Anslow (Mitchell 84), King, Jevons.
