AFCW 2 Continental Star 1

It was an eventful day for AFC Wulfrunians’ match winner Jamie King, as he struck two brilliant goals before receiving a straight red card in the second half in an hard-earned 2-1 win over Continental Star.

Wulfs took the lead after just 12 minutes- Rich Palmer was fouled 30 yards from goal and King stepped up to curl a left-footed free kick just out of Ryan Cheshire’s reach into the top corner.

The visitors’ best chance of the half came seven minutes before the break. James Reid threaded a ball in behind the defence for Harvey Smith, but he dragged his effort wide from the edge of the area.

King added his second of the game five minutes after the break to double his side’s lead with a second free kick. This time Nathan Rose-Laing was the man fouled on the edge of the area, but it was the same result as King fired past Cheshire again.

A penalty offered Continental Star a way back into the game; Darren Green was brought down in the area by Cameron Bridgen and Reid sent Danny Tipton the wrong way to pull a goal back.

Wulfrunians were reduced to ten men when goal scorer King was shown a straight red card. His poor touch saw the ball run through to the ‘keeper but King caught the keeper as he attempted to jump over him.

Ricky Anslow had the chance to put the game to bed with just five minutes to go. He broke clear down the right hand side and beat two players but his left-footed effort was well saved by Cheshire.

The game saw another positive for Wulfrunians, as winger Jake Webb made a long-awaited return from his injury. Next for Wulfs is Saturday’s visit of Pershore Town.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Bridgen, Ganderton (Webb 63), Hill, Hunt, Gregg, Palmer, Anslow, Rose-Laing (Jevons 63), King.
