Quorn 0 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians returned to winning ways as a solid defensive performance helped them to a battling away win against Quorn. James Skedgel got the winner, on his return to the side, which saw Wulfs leapfrog the hosts and up to 7th place in the table.

Although the early stages of the game were scrappy, there were still plenty of chances for both sides. In the first five minutes, Sam Moore carried the ball into Wulfs’ box, but dragged his shot wide of Danny Tipton’s right post.

The first Wulfrunians chance didn’t come until 25 minutes in. Demetri Brown broke clear of the Quorn defence but could not get a shot off; he instead cut the ball back to Jamie King, whose shot from the edge flew wide.

Brown had a chance of his own just minutes later: Jake Sedgemore fired a ball behind the defence which Brown latched on to, but the striker’s powerful effort to Jamie Witham’s near post was tipped behind for a corner.

The pair linked again to nearly put Wulfs in front just before the break. Sedgemore’s floated free kick was poorly cleared by the hosts as it fell to Brown on the penalty spot, but his volley grazed the post on its way wide.

The visitors eventually took a well-deserved lead with 21 minutes to go. Sedegmore’s free kick led to a scramble in the goal-mouth, with Witham managing to force the ball out of the six-yard box, but Skedgel forced it back towards goal and the ‘keeper couldn’t do enough to keep it out.

The game could have been put beyond doubt late on as Wulfs hit on the counter. Mitch McDonald beat one defender before lofting an inviting cross into the area which eventually fell to King, but he was denied by a strong save by Witham.

This game saw Wulfrunians pick up their third clean sheet in five games and they will look to use this momentum as they continue the busy Easter period with a game at home to Heath Hayes on Monday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Skedgel, Jones, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Perks (Rose-Laing 76), Palmer, McDonald, D Brown (Thompson 81), King.
