AFCW 3 Alvechurch 0

Andy Thompson bid a fond farewell to AFC Wulfrunians as he struck a fine hat-trick in a routine win over AlvechurchIt was a fitting end for Thompson, and Dave Asbury who is also departing the club.

It took just seven minutes for Wulfs to take the lead. A poor back-pass from Toby Checketts left Thompson in acres of space and the striker calmly placed his shot into the empty net.

Thompson doubled the lead on the half hour mark. Some good work from Jamie King on the left hand side sent him to the byline; he cut back to Thompson on the edge of the area who slotted home.

Nathan Rose-Laing could have extended Wulfs’ lead further as a poorly cleared free kick fell to him on the edge of the area, but his lofted effort was well tipped over by Michael McGrath.

Thompson almost turned provider just after half time. He nodded David Howells’ cross down to Mitch McDonald, but his volley was well saved by McGrath.

The striker completed his hat trick after 60 minutes to cap a fantastic final game. He stole the ball from the defender to leave him one-on-one with the ‘keeper and made no mistake as he fired it into the corner.

Alvechurch had a chance for a consolation late on, but Jono Brown was equal to Craig Thomas’ long range effort.

With this result, Wulfrunians finish the season in an extremely respectable seventh place in the Midland Football League Premier Division. Next year, they will look to continue to build in what will be their third season in the division.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: J Brown, Perks (Pearson 45), Jones, Howells, Hill, Asbury, McDonald (D Brown 71), Palmer, Thompson (Bood 68), King.
