Coventry Sphinx 0 AFCW 2

AFC Wulfrunians bounced back from three consecutive losses with a comprehensive victory over Coventry Sphinx. The scoreline did not fully reflect Wulfs’ dominance, as they were the better side throughout the game.

The tone was set for the game early on; Andy Thompson ran at the Sphinx defence and was hacked down by Ricky Fletcher. As players from both sides made their cases to the referee, the defender raised his hands to push Thompson, and was fortunate to only receive a booking.

Thompson also had the best of the early chances- he picked up the ball up on the halfway line and took it past one defender, only for his 35-yard effort to cannon off the crossbar.

Wulfs finally went ahead four minutes before the break. David Howells played the ball over the top of the defence and Thompson was on hand to chip the bouncing ball over the ‘keeper into the corner.

Within a minute, the lead should have been doubled. Howells was again on hand to provide the through ball, but this time Mitch McDonald dragged his shot from the edge of the area just wide.

The hosts’ best chance of the game came 24 minutes into the second half. Gio Dainty delivered a cross from deep, but Jono Brown saw Fletcher’s effort fly wide on his way to a clean sheet.

Wulfrunians ensured that they had an easy final few minutes as they added their second with five minutes remaining. Liam Bood showed some excellent footwork in the box but saw his cross deflected, it fell to McDonald who managed to force it into the top corner from two yards out.

This was Wulfs’ first clean sheet in 7 games and they will look to continue their solid defensive play on Tuesday night, as they begin a congested run of fixtures with a trip to Heath Hayes.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Jones, Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, McDonald, Palmer, Thompson, Rose-Laing (Bood 55), Howells.
