Walsall Wood 1 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians completed an impressive month as they drew away at high-flying Walsall Wood. This was the club’s only dropped points as they finished February unbeaten. Neither goalkeeper was given much to do, so both sides will not be too disappointed with having to settle for a point.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts; Corey Currithers squared to Ben Evans on the edge of the area, but Jono Brown pulled off a clever save as he tipped the shot behind for a corner.

Wulfs had a great chance of their own just before the break. Andy Thompson stole the ball from a Wood defender on the edge of the area but could only drag his one-on-one effort wide.

Wood were awarded a penalty five minutes into the second half. Harry Harris received the ball facing away from goal and he was bundled over as David Howells tried to prevent him getting a shot off.

Although Brown tried his best to put him off, Joey Butlin made no mistake in smashing the penalty into the roof of the net.

The lead could have been doubled immediately, had it not been for some quick thinking by Brown. Currithers again found Evans- as he played a great diagonal ball- but Brown rushed out and pushed the ball away at the last minute.

A Demetri Brown equaliser seemed to inject some life into Wulfs. Jake Sedgemore lofted the ball in behind the defence and the striker showed great commitment to head the bouncing ball over the ‘keeper- despite this resulting in him picking up a knock.

It looked like the visitors were going to sneak a victory in the final minute. Liam Bood played an excellent ball to Mitch McDonald and his shot was palmed away- the rebound fell to Boodbut he fired over from close range.

This was Wulfrunians’ first draw since November– they will look to continue their unbeaten form into March, and this begins with a trip to Stourport Swifts on Tuesday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: J Brown, Perks, Jones, Sedgemore, Talbot, Asbury, McDonald, Palmer (Rose-Laing 76), Bood, Thompson (D Brown 57), Howells.
